Operations at Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge were cancelled this week after "sterile" surgical instruments were found with human flesh and bone stuck on them. And it wasn’t just one surgical kit that was contaminated but 24 surgical kits. Fit for purpose? I don’t think so!
"Clearly unacceptable" is a bit of an understatement isn’t it. Better words that spring to mind are appalling, dangerous, unsafe, fatal. IH Sterile Services who clean Hillingdon Hospital’s instruments have apparently begun an urgent investigation. It will be interesting to see what the audit trail comes up with.
And they want Chiropodists and Podiatrists to use central sterilisation departments rather than our own autoclaves to sterilise our instruments. I’m never going to sign up to CSDD (Central Sterilising Service Department) until I’m forced to do it. I’d rather be in control of my own sterilising and then I would know it had been done properly. Let’s hope the new Government squash this one.
